Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is situated in the eastern zones of Jefferson County close Irondale, a suburb of Birmingham. The recreation center is named after William Henry Ruffner, a geologist from the Washington and Lee University; in 1883 he made a review of the region that was in the long run to wind up essential to the iron mineral and heater industry in Birmingham.The mines shut in 1953 and the protect is at present worked by the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center.
