Rialto Bridge and San Polo
About Rialto Bridge and San Polo
Once the main extension over the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge denotes the spot of the island's first settlement, called Rivus Altus high bank. Worked in 1588, about 150 years after the fall of a past wooden extension, this stone curve bolsters two occupied roads and a twofold arrangement of shops. Alongside filling in as a bustling intersection point halfway along the channel, it is a most loved vantage point for visitors taking - or posturing for - photographs, and for viewing the grouping of watercraft continually going under it.
It has a great altarpiece, The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, by Palma the Younger. The congregation of San Bartolomeo, near the San Marco end of the extension, was the congregation of the German traders who lived and worked in the Fondaco Dei Tedeschi German Commodity Exchange circumscribing the waterway here.
