Randalls and Wards Islands
About Randalls and Wards Islands
Randalls and Wards Island Park well known among locals and visitors, it is situated on Wards Island, a 255-section of land landmass lying in the northern end of the East River, amongst Manhattan and Queens. Known as Tenkenas Wild Lands Island at the season of its allocation from its local occupants to the Dutch in 1637, the island's name has changed a few times. Both Buchanan's Island and Great Barn Island were likely debasements of "Barendt," an early proprietor's name. A neighborhood law of 1949 approved the development of the 103rd Street footbridge, worked by the U.S. Armed force Corps of Engineers in 1951, which at long last obliged person on foot activity from East Harlem. The footbridge leads straightforwardly into Wards Island Park and gives simple access to the playing fields, bike ways, and picturesque waterfront.
