Quechee George
About Quechee George
The Quechee Gorge is situated in Quechee, Vermont along U.S. Highway 4. The crevasse is 165 feet profound and is the most profound canyon in Vermont. It fills in as a mainstream vacation destination in Quechee State Park and can be seen from the U.S. Highway 4 connect and from trails on the two sides of the chasm. The Ottauquechee River moves through the base of the chasm and is a prevalent whitewater kayak run.
The canyon was cut around 13,000 years prior as the Laurentide ice sheet withdrew over the area. The cutting is believed to be a consequence of fast downcutting of the Ottauquechee River after the seepage of frosty Lake Hitchcock. The canyon slices through bedrock of the Devonian Gile Mountain Formation and Mesozoic mafic embankments can be seen on the west divider.
