Princeton Battlefield State Park
About Princeton Battlefield State Park
The forested areas and fields about a mile from current Princeton University filled in as the site of one of the fiercest fights amid the American Revolution in 1777. The fight finished when American troops charged by General George Washington crushed British Regulars. The Battle of Princeton denoted Washington's first triumph against the British. An old oak, today called the Mercer Oak, remained amidst the combat zone close to the spot where General Hugh Mercer was injured amid the fight. He passed on nine days after the fact in the Clarke House. The house, worked by Thomas Clarke, stands today as observer to the furious battling, and it is loaded with war shows and furniture pieces from the period. Other than the front line, Mercer Oak, and the Clarke House, Princeton Battlefield State Park contains the Ionic Colonnade planned by the engineer Thomas U. Walter, and a stone yard that denotes the graves of American and British officers who kicked the bucket in the fight.
