Pea Patch Island
About Pea Patch Island
Pea Patch Island is a little island, around 1 mi 1.6 km long, in the U.S. province of Delaware, situated in the mid channel of the Delaware River close to its passage into Delaware Bay. It is a low, mucky island, situated in New Castle County, confronting Delaware City on the Delaware shore, and Finns Point on the New Jersey shore.
Once the area of key military resistances, the island is at present claimed by the State of Delaware as Fort Delaware State Park. The island rose as a mud bank in the stream in the eighteenth century. As indicated by fables, the island got its name after a ship brimming with peas ran on solid land on it, spilling its substance and prompting a development of the plant on the island.
