Oakland Cemetery
About Oakland Cemetery
The Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta started as six sections of land in 1850. It was initially outlined as a garden burial ground. Throughout the years, especially amid the season of the Civil War, the site developed, obliging those slaughtered on the front line. In the end the burial ground came to envelop 88 sections of land. In 1884 the burial ground quit offering plots. In the end this once stunning burial ground fell into decay as those tending the plots moved away or died.In 1976 Oakland Cemetery was proclaimed a National Historic Landmark and the Historic Oakland Foundation was set up. In mix with the city the association has done much work to keep up the graveyard. Today it is advanced as a noteworthy burial ground and parkland with greenhouses, figures, and natural life. There is even a Visitor Center and Museum Shop.
