North Market
About North Market
The present area of the North Market housed a burial ground known as the North Graveyard. After arrangements with city engineers, grave evacuation and movement started in 1872. In 1876, a market house and in addition other independent ventures and eateries were based on the land. This open space at 29 Spruce Street turned into the North Market. The North Market was the second of four open markets worked all through the city and is the main staying open market. The Central Market, worked in 1850 at Town and Fourth Streets as a blend City Hall and open market, was torn down in 1966 to clear a path for urban recharging and today is the area of Columbus' Greyhound transport station. The building once lodging the West Market on South Gift Street is presently a Boys and Girls Club.
The East Market at Mt. Vernon and Miami Avenues was devastated by flame in 1947. In 1948, very nearly one year to the day of the fire at the East Market, a similar catastrophe struck the North Market or North End Market as it was then called. The City of Columbus chose not to reconstruct the market but rather traders immediately pooled their assets to buy a war surplus Quonset cabin to house North Market. Despite the fact that the shippers purchased the building, the city held responsibility for Market property.
