Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Monument
About Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Monument
The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is the state's principal Civil War landmark. This exceptional case of municipal model stands in a conspicuous downtown area on the southeast tip of Campus Martius where five standard lanes meet - Michigan Avenue, Monroe Street, Cadillac Square, Fort Street, and Woodward Avenue. In 1865, the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Association was built up by Governor Austin Blair keeping in mind the end goal to gather reserves for a landmark recognizing Michigan's mariners and warriors executed amid the Civil War. Deliberate memberships from nationals were gathered and stone carver Randolph Rogers, who had made comparative Civil War dedicatory landmarks in Ohio and Rhode Island, was picked as the craftsman for the landmark.
