About Memphis National Cemetery

Initially called Mississippi River National Cemetery, Memphis National Cemetery was set up amid the American Civil War after the Union Army took control of Memphis. The burial ground was established with a specific end goal to bury war veterans who had kicked the bucket in different healing centers along the Mississippi delta. In 1865, Union warriors freed from Confederate POW camps kicked the bucket when their steamboat Sultana detonated, and they were additionally covered in Memphis. In 1867, around 250 setbacks of the Battle of Fort Pillow from the two sides were moved from different war zone burial grounds to this recently settled veteran graveyard. The burial ground spreads more than 44.2 sections of land and had 42,184 interments in 2007.
