About Matheson House
The Matheson House is a historic building in Gainesville, Florida, United States. It was the home of James Douglas Matheson and Augusta Florida Steele Matheson, the girl of Florida pioneer Augustus Steele, who established Hillsborough County and Cedar Key. James Douglas Matheson possessed a dry products store in downtown Gainesville and was dynamic in nearby and state governmental issues, similar to his child, eight-term Gainesville leader Chris Matheson, who was additionally a state legislator. Chris' dowager, Sarah Matheson, deeded the house to the Alachua County Historical Society, which later converged with the Matheson History Museum after it opened in 1994.
The Matheson house was developed in 1857 by the Matheson family from Camden, South Carolina. While it was empty amid the common war, James Douglas Matheson moved into it 1867 with his better half, Augusta Florida Steele. Their child, Christopher Matheson, later acquired the house. Christopher's dowager, Sarah Hamilton Matheson, would in the end deed the house to the Matheson Museum in the blink of an eye before her passing in 1996.
