Jordan House
About Jordan House
The Jordan House is a memorable building situated in West Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It was worked by abolitionist James C. Jordan and was a station on the Underground Railroad in Iowa. It has been recorded on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. Jordan was a dairy cattle agriculturist from Virginia, in spite of the fact that the territory is presently in West Virginia, who settled in focal Iowa in 1846. As a representative he composed the State Bank of Des Moines and was associated with conveying the railroad to Des Moines.
As a city pioneer he served on the Polk County Board of Supervisors, and was chosen to both the Iowa Senate and the Iowa House of Representatives. While in the state governing body he drove the push to move the state capital from Iowa City to Des Moines. Jordan was hitched twice. He and his first spouse Melinda had six kids. After her demise, he wedded Cynthia Adams and the family developed to eleven children. James Jordan's first abiding in Polk County was a shelter tent that he supplanted with a log lodge in 1848.
After two years development began on the present house. They moved into the cellar when it was finished. It was partitioned into a kitchen and a bed/living room. In 1851 the primary period of the upper floors was finished. The white casing house is two stories tall. The primary period of the house included an exquisite passageway, two vast rooms on the main floor and a walnut staircase that prompted two extensive rooms on the second floor. The kitchen stayed in the cellar.
