James Dwight Dana House
About James Dwight Dana House
Critical case of nineteenth century stuccoed block town house with wooden patio of Hindu deduction. It was outlined by Henry Austin for James Dwight Dana who was one of the main researchers of the nineteenth century and one of Yale's most recognized educators. He was the child in-law of researcher and Yale Professor, Benjamin Silliman and father of researcher and Yale Professor Edward Salisbury Dana. Sillimans and Danas have lived on Hillhouse Avenue for over 100 years. The house was worked in 1849 and stayed in the Dana family until obtained by Yale University in 1962.
Modifications and augmentations: Two increments, 1896 and 1905. A library expansion supplanted the patio on the west side. A wing was added toward the north side which fronts on Trumbul Street. The ground surface in the library, and in addition the glass and roof work, show an early date for that expansion, potentially as ahead of schedule as the house itself, in this manner inferring an adjustment in the first designs.
