Gettysburg Battlefield
About Gettysburg Battlefield
The Battle of Gettysburg, battled from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is viewed as the most vital engagement of the American Civil War. After an awesome triumph over Union powers at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee walked his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania in late June 1863. On July 1, the propelling Confederates conflicted with the Union's Army of the Potomac, told by General George G. Meade, at the junction town of Gettysburg. The following day saw considerably heavier battling, as the Confederates assaulted the Federals on both left and right. On July 3, Lee requested an assault by less than 15,000 troops on the foe's inside at Cemetery Ridge. The strike, known as "Pickett's Charge," figured out how to penetrate the Union lines yet in the end fizzled, at the cost of thousands of renegade setbacks, and Lee was compelled to pull back his battered armed force toward Virginia on July 4.
