Fortress Homestead was on a meadow sitting above Gold Hill from the upper east simply over the old Virginia and Truckee Railroad burrow when one first goes around Greiner's Bend going south on State Route 342 from Virginia City into Gold Hill. In late-winter of 1863, Mr. Z. Lyford found 200 feet of ground called the Homestead mining claim.
Mr. Lyford was additionally the primary proprietor of the claim and administrator of the mine. By December of 1863, he had burned through $1500 sinking a pole 102 feet and running a float 115 feet. He had additionally fenced a plot of ground 200 feet square, began reviewing a carriage street around the noticeable glade on the property, and fabricated his home.
