About First Presbyterian Church
The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, is a congregation in Stamford, Connecticut composed by draftsman Wallace K. Harrison. Nicknamed Fish Church, for its surprising shape, it is a one of a kind case of pioneer engineering, and a structural point of interest. Its 260-foot-tall Maguire Memorial Tower holds a 56-ringer chimes. The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford was a wooden structure situated at 90 Broad Street from 1854 to 1882 when it burned to the ground. It was supplanted with a stone structure, amplified in 1920, which was utilized until 1958. In 1954, the gathering voted to migrate to its present area at 1101 Bedford Street.
Designed by Wallace K. Harrison, the new asylum was committed in March 1958. Its shape has been compared to that of a fish-an image utilized as a part of early Christianity. The fish shape is clear both in the profile and in the floor design of the structure. Improving the remarkable state of the congregation are the tremendous recolored glass windows in the haven, which contain in excess of 20,000 bits of faceted glass. These windows portray the tale of the Crucifixion on the correct side, and the Resurrection on the left. A 32-foot-high 9.8 m cross looked with wood from the Canterbury Cathedral in England, overwhelms the Chancel. The congregation initially had an electronic organ, now supplanted with a vast Visser-Rowland pipe organ.
