El Capitan
About El Capitan
The approach was named "El Capitan" by the Mariposa Battalion when they investigated the valley in 1851. El Capitan "the skipper", "the director" was taken to be a free Spanish illustration of the region Native American name for the slant, unmistakably made a translation of as "To-to-kon oo-lah" or "To-tock-ah-noo-lah" Miwok tongue. It is unclear if the Native American name recommended a particular normal chief or just inferred "the supervisor" or "shake director".
The stone milestone interfaces around 3,000 feet 900 m from base to summit along its tallest face, and is a standard locale for shake climbers and BASE jumpers.
