About Downtown Presbyterian Church
Presbyterians have worshiped at the side of Fifth and Church since 1814. After the Battle of New Orleans, the State of Tennessee gave General Andrew Jackson a formal sword on the front strides of the congregation. It made due until the point when a fire crushed it in 1832.Modifying in that year, on a similar site, the second building facilitated the Inauguration of James K. Polk as Governor of Tennessee. That building torched in 1848. The assemblage at that point enlisted the Philadelphia designer William Strickland, who was in Tennessee to outline and regulate the development of the Tennessee State Capitol working, to plan the present building. Amid the Civil War the building was seized by the United States government, and utilized as a healing facility.
