Chimney Rock National Historic Site
About Chimney Rock National Historic Site
Chimney Rock is a noticeable land shake development in Morrill County in western Nebraska. Rising almost 300 feet over the encompassing North Platte River valley, the pinnacle of Chimney Rock is 4,228 feet above ocean level. The development filled in as a historic point along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Mormon Trail amid the mid-nineteenth century. The trails kept running along the north side of the stone, which remains a noticeable point of interest for current explorers along U.S. Highway 26 and Nebraska Highway 92. The column comprises principally of Brule dirt interlayered with volcanic fiery remains and Arikaree sandstone. The harder sandstone layers close to the best have secured the column since it split far from the withdrawing precipice line toward the south. Smokestack Rock rises roughly 286 feet over its environment.
