Chimney Hill
About Chimney Hill
Smokestack Hill in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma was a point of interest on the old California Road. It was distinguished on old maps as Natural Mound. Its noticeable quality made it a noteworthy reference point for some overviews and in 1920 it turned into the site of the U.S. Drift and Geodetic Survey Mound Triangulation Station. The first Oklahoma Society Daughters of the American Revolution part was set up in Ada on October 12, 1926, with 13 sanction individuals and Mrs. Lottie Braly as its first official. Around 1936, the section disbanded because of the passing of a few individuals and the slow disseminating of different individuals.
On February 1, 1971, Chimney Hill Chapter was granted its sanction to 27 individuals and Mrs. Melvin R. Race as its official. The name, Chimney Hill, was recommended by Mrs. Lottie Braly. In 1849, "Smokestack Hill" was a characteristic outcropping in southern Pontotoc County, which took after a stack, yet disintegration and time had pulverized its appearance. The old California street crossed Pontotoc County, and pioneers knew "Smokestack Hill." Without maps, or maybe just roughly drawn maps, these outcroppings, or guide-focuses, were vital to keeping travelers on the correct way
