Cadillac Mountain
About Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain is situated on Mount Desert Island, inside Acadia National Park. With a rise of 1,530 feet 466 meters, its summit is the most noteworthy point in Hancock County and the most elevated inside 25 miles 40 km of the shoreline of the North American landmass between the Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia and Mexican pinnacles 180 miles 290 km south of the Texas border. Before being renamed in 1918, the mountain had been called Green Mountain. The new name respects the French voyager and explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. In 1688, De la Mothe asked for and got from the Governor of New France a bundle of land in a zone known as Donaquec which included piece of the Donaquec River now the Union River and the island of Mount Desert in the present-day U.S. province of Maine. Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, an improper self-promoter who had just appropriated the "de la Mothe" segment of his name from a nearby aristocrat in his local Picardy, from that point alluded to himself as Antoine de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, Donaquec, and Mount Desert.
