Biloxi Light
About Biloxi Light
Biloxi Lighthouse is a beacon in Biloxi, Mississippi, contiguous the Mississippi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico. The beacon has been kept by female guardians for a larger number of years than some other beacon in the United States. It was recorded on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and proclaimed a Mississippi Landmark in 1987. On March 3, 1847, the United States Congress approved $12,000 for the development of a beacon at Biloxi.
The United States Department of the Treasury let an agreement, dated October 15, 1847, to Murray and Hazlehurst to assemble an iron beacon for $6,347.00. The attendant's home was contracted independently. The Collector at Mobile, Alabama, obtained the site. The pinnacle was finished and put in activity in 1848. The pinnacle was 45 feet 14 m from the base to the light room and showed nine lights. The main guardian was Marcellus J. Howard.
