About Bennett Place
Bennett Place, in some cases known as Bennett Farm, in Durham, North Carolina.After Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea, he turned north through the Carolinas for the Carolinas Campaign. Confederate President Jefferson Davis met his General Joseph E. Johnston in Greensboro, North Carolina, while Sherman had halted in Raleigh. In spite of the fact that Davis wished to proceed with the war, Johnston sent a dispatch to the Union troops digs in at Morrisville, with a message to General Sherman, offering a gathering between the lines to talk about a détente. Johnston, whose armed force was as yet a dynamic battling power stayed in Greensboro, acknowledged they couldn't proceed with the war now that Robert E. Lee had surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
