Bear Paw Battlefield
About Bear Paw Battlefield
Bear Paw Battlefield is found only 15 Miles South of Chinook on US Highway 240. The Battlefield is the last resting spot of many men, ladies and youngsters following the Nez Perce War of 1877. A five-day fight and attack happened where almost 800 Nez Perce who had fled Idaho, were found looking for shelter in Canada. Only forty miles shy of the Canadian outskirt, Chief Joseph gave his everlasting discourse, "from where the sun now stands, I will battle no more, perpetually" on October fifth, 1877.
The war zone is open year round amid the sunlight hours and we urge you to stop by the Blaine County Museum in Chinook already. The gallery, situated at 501 Indiana Street offers a magnificent sound/visual introduction called "40 Miles from Freedom", giving the guest a visual vibe of the fight itself and what happened.
