The Woolwich foot tunnel crosses below the River Thames in East London from Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich to North Woolwich in the London Borough of Newham. The tunnel gives pedestrians and cyclists an opportunity manner to pass the river whilst the Woolwich Free Ferry carrier isn't always operating. Both entrances to the tunnel are Grade II indexed homes. The south front is extremely hidden at the back of the Waterfront enjoyment centre. It is the oldest remaining constructing in the riverside place of Old Woolwich.
The tunnel turned into designed via Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice and constructed by using Walter Scott & Middleton for London County Council and opened via Lord Cheylesmore, Chairman of the LCC, on Saturday, 26 October 1912. Its advent owed a great deal to the efforts of operating-class politician Will Crooks who had worked inside the docks and, after chairing the LCC's Bridges Committee answerable for the tunnel, would later serve as Labour MP for Woolwich. On 24 September 2010, Greenwich Council closed the Woolwich foot tunnel to all customers, due to structural weaknesses observed inside the stairways and tunnel itself. The tunnel changed into at the beginning predicted to re-open in August 2011, but this target turned into ignored.
