The first royal residence on the site was worked around 970 by Bishop Aethelwold of Winchester on a land parcel known as Wulveseye or Wulf's island, an eyot in the River Itchen east of the house of prayer. Around 1110, the second Norman religious administrator, William Giffard, built another corridor toward the south west. His successor, Henry of Blois, sibling of King Stephen added a moment lobby toward the west in the vicinity of 1135 and 1138.
Another royal residence in the rococo style was worked toward the south by Sir Thomas Finch for Bishop Morley in 1684. Nonetheless, Bishop North devastated everything except the west wing of this royal residence in 1786.
