About Whitstable Museum and Gallery
Whitstable Museum and Gallery is a history centre in Whitstable, Kent, with shows displaying the records of the neighborhood oyster trade started out through the Romans and of ancient diving equipment. The present museum changed into established in 1985. The museum obtained the Nautiek Award, for offerings to diving records, in 2001; the first time the award have been given to a UK status. A recent Arts Council grant has enabled the museum to be repainted, with new lighting fixtures and a widespread facelift. The building's small doorway opens up right into a massive hall of displays.
In 1881, the Ancient Order of Foresters bought the building and inscribed "Foresters' Hall" over the door. The museum has collections and displays on themes of the natural world, local oyster trade, early diving and the actor, Peter Cushing, who lived locally, as well as presentations at the 1953 floods, shipwrecks and maritime archaeology. The collections are held underneath the following headings: social history, technology and generation, maritime, land transport, best art, decorative and implemented art, files and archaeology.
