Wheatland
About Wheatland
It is a block, Federal style house outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster Township, Lancaster County. It was some time ago possessed by the fifteenth President of the United States, James Buchanan.
The house was built in 1828 by William Jenkins, a nearby legal advisor. It was sold to William M. Meredith in 1841. Wheatland changed hands again in 1848, when it was bought by Buchanan. Buchanan possessed the house for the following two decades, with the exception of quite a while amid his ambassadorship in Great Britain and amid his administration.
It was acquired by a relative of Willson's in 1929. Wheatland was set available to be purchased again after the relative passed on in 1934 and was gained by a gathering of individuals who set up an establishment to preserve the house. Wheatland was assigned a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. It was assigned a contributing property toward the Northeast Lancaster Township Historic District in 1980. The establishment and the adjoining recorded society converged in 2009.
