About Ulverston
Ulverston is a marketplace city within the South Lakeland district of Cumbria in North West England. Historically in Lancashire, the city is within the Furness location eight miles north-east of Barrow-in-Furness. It is close to the Lake District, and just north of Morecambe Bay, neighboured by way of Swarthmoor, Pennington and Rosside. Lverston's most visible landmark is Hoad Monument, a concrete shape built in 1850 to commemorate statesman and local resident Sir John Barrow.
The monument affords perspectives of the surrounding area, including Morecambe Bay and parts of the Lake District. Ulverston Canal, now not navigable, was as soon as a important element of the town's economy and remains celebrated with an art set up. The name Ulverston, first recorded inside the Domesday Book as Ulurestun, is derived from factors: the first is both the Old Norse personal name Ulfarr, or the Old English Wulfhere; the second one detail is the Old English tun, that means "farmstead" or "village".
The personal names Ulfarr and Wulfhere each translate more or less as "wolf warrior" or "wolf navy", which explains the presence of a wolf in town's coat of fingers. The lack of the 'W' in Wulfhere may be attributed to the historical Scandinavian have an impact on inside the location. Locally, the city has historically been referred to as Oostan. Other iations of the name recorded in the course of history include Oluestonam, and Uluereston.
