Tonbridge Castle
About Tonbridge Castle
Tonbridge Castle is situated in Tonbridge, Kent, England. Following the Norman Conquest, Richard Fitz Gilbert was granted land in Kent to guard the crossing of the River Medway. He raised a straightforward Motte-and-bailey mansion on the site. To burrow the canal and erect the motte 50,000 tons of earth were moved. In 1088, the de Clare family defied King William II. His armed force assaulted the mansion. In the wake of holding for two days the stronghold fell and as discipline the lord had both the palace and the town of Tonbridge copied to the ground.
Prior to 1100, the de Clares supplanted the wooden palace with a stone shell keep. This was fortified amid the 13th ?century, and in 1295 a stone divider was worked around the town. The twin-transcend gatehouse was worked by Richard de Clare, third Earl of Hertford or his child Gilbert. Development of the gatehouse took 30 years, being finished in 1260. The gatehouse imparts numerous likenesses to the ones at Caerphilly Castle worked by Gilbert in 1268-1271. The considerable seal of England was incidentally kept here amid one of Edward I's visits to France. You can visit this place with your friends and loved ones.
