Tonbridge
About Tonbridge
Tonbridge is a historic market town in the English county of Kent. It is located upon the River Medway, approximately 4 miles north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, 12 miles south west of Maidstone and 29 miles south east of London. It has a place with the managerial ward of Tonbridge and Malling, and had a populace of 40,356 of every 2015. The town was recorded in the Domesday Book 1087 as Tonebrige, which may demonstrate a scaffold having a place with the domain or house, or then again an extension having a place with Tunna, a typical Anglo-Saxon man's name.
Another hypothesis proposes that the name is a constriction of "town of extensions", because of the substantial number of streams the High Street initially crossed. Until 1870, the town's name was spelt Tunbridge, as appeared on old maps including the 1871 Ordnance Survey guide and contemporary issues of the Bradshaw railroad direct. In 1870, this was changed to Tonbridge by the GPO because of disarray with close-by Tunbridge Wells, in spite of Tonbridge being a significantly more established settlement. Tunbridge Wells has constantly kept up a similar spelling. Tonbridge railroad station is one of Kent's busiest with 4.1 million travelers utilizing it every year. It is a critical railroad intersection with lines to London, Ashford, Hastings and Redhill.
