Thornaby is a royal charter town, civil parish and former borough in North Yorkshire, England. Generally part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, Thornaby is arranged on the south bank of the River Tees, specifically south-east of Stockton-on-Tees and 4 mi southwest of Middlesbrough. It has a populace of 24,741 and is in the unitary specialist of Stockton-on-Tees. The name Thornaby appeared around 800 AD when the land was given by Halfdene, King of the Danes, to Thormod, one of his aristocrats, consequently "Thormods-by" – Thormod's farmstead.
