About The Castle

The Castle, Newcastle is a medieval stronghold in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, based on the site of the fortification that gave the City of Newcastle its name. The most conspicuous outstanding structures on the site are the Castle Keep, the mansion's fundamental sustained stone pinnacle, and the Black Gate, its invigorated gatehouse. Utilization of the site for protective purposes dates from Roman circumstances, when it housed a post and settlement called Pons Aelius, guarding an extension over the River Tyne.

Robert Curthose, oldest child of William the Conqueror, in 1080 assembled a wooden motte and bailey style palace on the site of the Roman fortress. Curthose assembled this 'New Castle upon Tyne' after he returned south from a battle against Malcolm III of Scotland. Henry II manufactured the stone Castle Keep was worked in the vicinity of 1172 and 1177 on the site of Curthose's stronghold. Henry III included the Black Gate in the vicinity of 1247 and 1250. Nothing stays of the Roman post or the first motte and bailey manor. The Keep is a Grade I recorded building, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The Castle Keep and Black Gate pre-date the development of the Newcastle town divider, development of which began around 1265, and did exclude it. The site of the keep is in the focal point of Newcastle and deceives the east of Newcastle station. The 75-foot (23 m) hole between the Keep and the Gatehouse is primarily filled by the railroad viaduct that conveys the East Coast Main Line from Newcastle to Scotland.
