About Tavistock
Tavistock is an ancient stannary and market town within West Devon, England. It is situated on the River Tavy from which its name derives. The three discretionary wards had a populace of 13,028. It follows its written history back to no less than 961 when Tavistock Abbey, whose remnants lie in the focal point of the town, was established. Its most popular child is Sir Francis Drake.
The region around Tavistock where the River Tavy runs wide and shallow enabling it to be effortlessly crossed, and close to the protected high ground of Dartmoor, was possessed well before chronicled records.
