Taunton Castle
About Taunton Castle
Taunton Castle is a castle built to defend the town of Taunton, Somerset, England. It has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans at that point assembled a stone organized manor, which had a place with the Bishops of Winchester. The current intensely recreated structures are the internal ward, which presently houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum. The building was assigned a review I recorded working in 1952.
Taunton was a common Norman keep of the main portion of the twelfth century, 50 feet long by 40 feet wide, in three stories, with dividers somewhere in the range of 13 feet thick. This was let into the dividers of an internal ward with a stone enceinte and, there was an external bailey spoken to by the advanced "Manor Green". Until the late 17th ?century the stronghold was as yet utilized as a jail. The colossal corridor and internal ward of the first château make up the Museum of Somerset which opened in September 2011 after a £7 million renovation, halfway subsidized by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
