St Mary's University, Twickenham, the united states of america's oldest Roman Catholic University, is situated on the Waldegrave Road. Its sports activities grounds have been used as a training web site for the 2012 Olympics.
The 19th-century development is named after "Strawberry Hill", the fanciful Gothic Revival villa designed with the aid of creator Horace Walpole among 1749 and 1776. It started out as a small 17th century house "little greater than a cottage", with only five acres of land and ended up as a "little Gothic citadel" in 46 acres. The unique owner had named the residence "Chopped Straw Hall", however Walpole desired it to be known as something more one of a kind and after locating an vintage rent that described his land as "Strawberry Hill Shot", he adopted this name.
