About Standen
Standen is an arts and crafts house situated toward the south of East Grinstead, West Sussex, England. The house and its encompassing patio nurseries have a place with the National Trust and are available to the general population. It is a Grade I recorded building. Somewhere in the range of 1891 and 1894 engineer Philip Webb, who was a companion of William Morris, structured the house for a prosperous London specialist, James Beale, his better half Margaret, and their group of seven youngsters. The house is built in the Wealden vernacular style with sandstone quarried from the home and privately made blocks and tiles. The inside is finished with Morris rugs, textures and backdrops, with decorations likewise by Morris, and the garden supplements the excellence of the house.
From the begin the house had electric power, initially produced by a jackass motor in a shed by the old barn. The house still has its unique electric light fittings, structured by W. A. S. Benson. After Beale's demise in 1912, Margaret Beale kept on living at Standen. When she kicked the bucket in 1936, their unmarried girl, Margaret, succeeded her, and after her demise in 1947, Standen came into the ownership of Helen, their most youthful little girl, likewise unmarried.On Helen's demise in 1972 the house gone by endowment to the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty.
