St Leonards Tower
About St Leonards Tower
St Leonard's Tower is a possible Norman preserve in West Malling, in the county of Kent, England. The tower become likely built via Gundulf, the Bishop of Rochester, among 1077 and 1108. It was a 3 storey constructing, built of local stone, and would have stood at the least 22 metres excessive. At a later point, possibly at some point of the English Civil War, the tower become intentionally broken to prevent it being used for military functions, and its uppermost storey changed into demolished. Concerns grew about the tower's situation in the 20th century and in 1937 it become taken into the guardianship of the kingdom.
In the twenty first century, it is managed with the aid of English Heritage and the outdoors is open to traffic. St Leonard's Tower became constructed inside the manor of West Malling, probable among 1077 and 1108, despite the fact that its exact origins are doubtful. Early theories proposed that the tower become a part of St Leonard's Church, the primary facts of which date from around 1120. This idea advised that the tower was built by Gundulf, the Bishop of Rochester from 1077 onwards, who owned the manor and built Malling Abbey, a close-by nunnery. The tower may want to have acted as a bell tower for the church, which survived until the rest of the constructing turned into destroyed inside the 18th century. This is very beautifull traveller spot.
