About St Georges Roman Catholic Church

The Church of St. George is a Roman Catholic church in Taunton, Somerset, which dates from the mid-19th century. It was the second Catholic church to be worked in Taunton after the Reformation, supplanting the substantially littler St George's Chapel. The primary church building is assigned by Historic England as a Grade II recorded building, while the parsonage is Grade II recorded. The Catholic people group in Taunton developed all through the nineteenth century, and inside 40 years of the fulfillment of St George's Chapel, it was viewed as too little. The Church of St George was based ashore given by the town's Franciscan Convent, with financing raised by the minister, Rev John Mitchell.

It was opened in 1860, despite the fact that building work proceeded over the next decades, and a parsonage and school were both added to the site. The congregation was not blessed until 1912. St George's was worked amid the Gothic Revival, and looks to some extent like the Somerset towers. It at present fills in as one of two Catholic holy places in Taunton, alongside the Church of St Teresa's. The congregation is worked of red Monkton stone, with Bath stone ashlar dressings in a mid fourteenth century Gothic design. Nikolaus Pevsner depicted it just like an "able impersonation" of a Somerset tower, in spite of the fact that he takes note of that the specifying is more streaming than the run of the mill Perpendicular Gothic style of the Somerset towers.
