About St Edmundsbury Cathedral

St Edmundsbury Cathedral is the house of God for the Church of England's Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. It is the seat of the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and is in Bury St Edmunds. Beginning in the 11th century, it was modified in the 12th and 16th century as a ward church and turned into a basilica in 1914; it has been significantly augmented in ongoing decades. A church has remained on the site of the house of God since somewhere around 1065, when St Denis' Church was worked inside the regions of Bury St Edmunds Abbey.
In the mid 12th century the Abbot, Anselm had needed to make a journey en route of St James to Santiago de Compostela. He was unsuccessful and rather remade St Denis' and committed the new church to Saint James, which filled in as the ward church for the north side of Bury St Edmunds. Anselm was likewise in charge of building the monastery door tower, referred to today as the Norman Tower, nearby St James's, which additionally filled in as the congregation's steeple and it proceeds in this capacity to the present day.
