St Catherines Chapel
About St Catherines Chapel
In 1811, the thirteen inhabitants were expanded to fifteen, by introducing two additional residences. After the inhabitants were moved to Summerland, the almshouses were accounted for to be in a poor condition of repair. The sanctuary appended to the almshouses were, by the start of the nineteenth Century, utilized as a woodworkers shop.
It was in 1879, that the Western Times announced that the tenants of St Catherine's were to be exchanged to another house in Summerlands, permitting St Catherine's opportunity as an almshouse to slip by in 1893. In 1894, Lady Hotham financed their reclamation and they were given over to the Church Army as an inn. The almshouse and house of prayer were built on open ground, out of red Heavitree breccia with dressing of ashlar or Beer stone, for moldings around the entryways and windows.
