About Somerset Brick and Tile Museum
The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum is in Bridgwater, Somerset, England and is regulated by The South West Heritage Trust. The gallery is devoted to the Brick and Tile Industry of Somerset. Bridgwater had been a focal point of exchange and industry since the Middle Ages, profiting from neighborhood mud from the alluvial stores of the River Parrett to make blocks and tiles. In the 1840s there were 1,300 individuals in Bridgewater utilized making blocks and tiles.
The Chandos Glass Cone was worked in 1725 as a glasswork terminating oven by James Brydges, first Duke of Chandos as a feature of a mechanical advancement. After a brief time of utilization for glassmaking it was changed over for the generation of earthenware, blocks and tiles, which proceeded until 1939. Most of the brickwork cone was crushed in 1943. The last 2.4 meters has been protected and planned as an old monument. It fuses the last surviving 'zenith oven' in Bridgwater, which dates from the 19th century, and has been booked as an old landmark and Grade recorded building.
