About Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, England. The metropolis is at the River Severn and the 2011 census recorded a populace of 71,715. Shrewsbury is a marketplace metropolis whose centre has a in large part unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, consisting of several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, had been based in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Bernard Law Montgomery.

The metropolis is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and is wherein he spent 27 years of his lifestyles. Located nine miles east of the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as the economic centre for Shropshire and mid-Wales, with a retail output of over 299 million in step with year and mild enterprise and distribution centres, together with Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts. The A5 and A49 trunk roads come together because the city's by-bypass, and 5 railway traces meet at Shrewsbury railway station.

The metropolis is positioned a hundred and fifty miles north-west of London. The city changed into the early capital of the Kingdom of Powys, recognised to the historic Britons as Pengwern, signifying "the alder hill"; and in Old English as Scrobbesburh, which may also suggest either "Scrobb's fort" or "the fortified region inside the bushes". This name gradually evolved in 3 directions, into Sciropscire, which became Shropshire; into Sloppesberie, which became Salop / Salopia, and into Schrosberie, which sooner or later have become the town's call, Shrewsbury. Its later Welsh name Amwythig way "fortified place".
