The Square Tower at the offshore end of the High Street in Old Portsmouth is among the most punctual stone strongholds worked in what is presently known as Old Portsmouth. Together with the Round Tower, the nearby ocean divider and the Saluting Platform are the main parts of the Tudor attempts to survive. The pinnacle was worked in 1494 amid the rule of Henry VII and was the habitation of the military representative until the adaption of the Domus Dei as the Governors living arrangement in around 1580.
Towards the finish of the sixteenth or mid-seventeenth century, the pinnacle was embraced for use as a magazine and it was amid this time the pinnacle was associated with a common war occurrence. Amid the English Civil War 1642-1649, the Square Tower was utilized as a weapons store and contained a lot of black powder and weapons.
The Town of Portsmouth was under attack with the Royalist powers caught inside the town by the Roundhead powers. As a last negotiating tool the Royalist Governor of Portsmouth Colonel Goring debilitated to explode the pinnacle and its weapons unless the terms of his own surrender were consented to. The Roundheads consented to his terms, enabling him to board deliver in the harbor. However, in the last demonstration of disobedience Goring took the way to the pinnacle with him and tossed it over the edge into Portsmouth harbor.
