About Paisley Abbey

Assembled to a great extent of a fine dark stone it has a striking nearness and supplements the yellow stone of the substantially more elaborate and late Town Hall.
Paisley Abbey's causes go back to 1163 and the marking of a contract by Walter Fitzalan, the High Steward of Scotland, for the establishing of a Cluniac cloister ashore he claimed in Renfrewshire. Fitzalan was one of the English Normans conveyed to Scotland by David I in the mid 1100s.
Fitzalan likely felt that the devotion showed by his sense of duty regarding the Abbey had paid early profits when only a year later he crushed the armed force of Somerled, King of the Isles, at Inchinnan near the River Clyde and a couple of miles north of Paisley.
