Paignton Pier
About Paignton Pier
Paignton Pier is a delight wharf in the huge English shoreline resort of Paignton, Devon. It was financed by Arthur Hyde Dendy, a neighborhood Paignton lawyer and planned by George Soudon Bridgman. The 780 feet dock, with its standard excellent structure at the offshore end, was opened to the general population without precedent for June 1879. The wharf head structure was home to numerous types of excitement including singing, moving, presentations, music lobby, and most broadly Gilbert and Sullivan's comic musical show, retitled HMS Pinafore on the water, performed by Mr D'Oyley's full organization on 27 and 28 July 1880. In 1881 the dock head was augmented to encourage the development of a pool room, bordering the structure.
On the demise of Arthur Dendy Paignton Pier was obtained by the Devon Dock, Pier and Steamship Company, under whose proprietorship it turned into a standard stop for oar steamers going among Torquay and Brixham. In 1919 the dock head and its related structures were devastated in a fire. These were never supplanted and a time of decay pursued. Segmented as a barrier measure in 1940, inspired by a paranoid fear of German attack, the harmed neck was in the end repaired once threats had stopped.
