Openshaw Park
About Openshaw Park
Openshaw Park was one of four parks set up following an open gathering in 1883, with commitments from Lord Derby, the Lord of the Manor, an open membership, and, in this specific case, liberal commitments of land and cash from a nearby supporter, Mr. Thomas O Openshaw. This and another three parks were opened by the Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Albert Victor, on 21 July 1888. The Openshaw of adjacent Primrose Hill were woolen producers and incredible supporters of the nearby group.
The contiguous St Thomas' Church was a blessing in 1866 from T.O. Openshaw's uncle, who was additionally called Thomas. The recreation center, which was initially known as Rochdale Road entertainment ground, was later renamed Openshaw Park, to pay tribute to its contributor. The protracted report of the Royal opening in the East Lancashire Echo 21 July 1888 incorporates a depiction of the first stop, represented with pen and ink illustrations and portrays the effect that the recreation center had on Rochdale Road.
