Okehampton Castle
About Okehampton Castle
Okehampton Castle is a medieval motte and bailey chateau in Devon, England. It was worked somewhere in the range of 1068 and 1086 by Baldwin Fitz Gilbert following a revolt in Devon against Norman control, and framed the focal point of the Honor of Okehampton, guarding an intersection point over the West Okement River. It proceeded being used as a fortress until the late thirteenth century, when its proprietors, the de Courtenays, turned into the Earls of Devon. With their new riches, they redeveloped the manor as an extravagant chasing lodge, fabricating another deer stop that extended south from the chateau, and developing chic lodgings that abused the perspectives over the scene.
The de Courtenays thrived and the mansion was additionally extended to oblige their developing family. The de Courtenays were vigorously engaged with the fifteenth century Wars of the Roses and Okehampton Castle was every now and again appropriated. By the mid sixteenth century the manor was still in great condition, yet after Henry Courtenay was executed by Henry VIII the property was deserted and left to rot, while the recreation center was leased by the Crown.
