About Okehampton
Okehampton is a town and common area in West Devon in the English region of Devon. It is arranged at the northern edge of Dartmoor, and had a populace of 5,922 at the 2011 census. Two discretionary wards are situated in the town east and west. Their joint populace at a similar evaluation is 7,500. Okehampton is 21 miles 33 km west of Exeter, 26 miles 42 km north of Plymouth and 24 miles 38 km south of Barnstaple.
Okehampton was established by the Saxons. The soonest composed record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, which means settlement by the Ockment, a stream which goes through the town. It was recorded as a place for slaves to be liberated at cross roads. In the same way as other towns in the West Country, Okehampton developed on the medieval fleece trade. Notable structures in the town incorporate the fifteenth century church of St. James and Okehampton Castle, which was set up by the Norman Sheriff of Devon, Baldwin FitzGilbert.
Okehampton was the caput of a huge primitive barony, which at the season of the Domesday Book was held by Baldwin FitzGilbert. After his demise in 1090 the residency of the barony is dark for the following twenty years after which it was held by the beneficiary Maud d'Avranches until her demise in 1173, which go to her girl, Hawise de Curci kicked the bucket 1219, who wedded Reginald de Courtenay.
