About Newark Castle
Newark Castle, in Newark, in the English district of Nottinghamshire was established in the mid 12th century by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. Initially a timber mansion, it was remade in stone towards the century's end. Destroyed in the 17th century after the English Civil War, the palace was re-established in the 19th century, first by Anthony Salvin during the 1840s and afterward by the organization of Newark who purchased the site in 1889. The Gilstrap Heritage Center is a free-affirmation exhibition hall in the mansion grounds about the historical backdrop of the town of Newark.
